All Jersey scenes are inspired not only by their history and character but by the beautiful surroundings. I cannot paint a Jersey scene without delving into its history and finding out more about it. You might find it interesting too.

There are two churches on this site, the larger Parish Church and the much smaller, ancient Fisherman’s Chapel. which occupies the site of the original wooden church built by Saint Brelade in the 6th Century.

Walking around this churchyard and as with most cemeteries, I felt a sense of peace, stillness, serenity but I also found myself wondering about the lives of those buried there. Headstones, being grey, brown, plain, I felt didn’t reflect the lives of the deceased, they never do – or the only thing they do indicate is if they were affluent or not. They didn’t show the love, the joy, children, laughter, caring, kindness, happiness so I painted the cemetery with that thought in mind making the headstones as vibrant and colourful as I imagined those lying below might have been. Also the poem “Dash” ringing in my ears. If only we could wander around a cemetery and read about the lives lying under the headstones.
