Portelet

.

A wonderful hand drawn and inked print of Portelet, Jersey.

.

All Jersey scenes are inspired not only by their history and character but by the beautiful surroundings. I cannot paint a Jersey scene without delving into its history and finding out more about it. You might find it interesting too.

.

Reached by a worthwhile steep walk down to this magical bay, the Martello Tower construction on an islet in the middle of the bay was completed in 1808 to house a garrison. Accessible at low tide, this islet is the burial place of Philippe Janvrin who upon returning to the Island, died of the plague in 1721.

.

Well worth the climb up and down. Exploring the islet at low tide is somehow peaceful, away from the beach crowd. Janvrin’s tomb is still, quiet, unlike the storms and wars that have raged around it through history.
