L’Hermitage

.

A wonderful hand drawn and inked print of L’Hermitage, Jersey.

.

All Jersey scenes are inspired not only by their history and character but by the beautiful surroundings. I cannot paint a Jersey scene without delving into its history and finding out more about it. You might find it interesting too.

.

Built on a tiny, high rock 275 metres away from the south coast of Jersey, in a hermitage lived a hermit called Helier, who having fled from France, lived here in the 6th century. He brought the gospel and guidance of the time to the small number of islanders and helped protect the Island by warning those on shore of seafaring attackers and they would scatter into the marshland that is now St. Helier. Helier died in 555AD after being beheaded by marauding pirates and is the Saint in St. Helier.

.

I adore the serenity of L’Hermitage. The quietness, the tiny steps leading up to this tiny chapel, I feel a presence. The age of L’Hermitage compared to the age of the German bunker show again how history throughout the ages stands side by side.
