All Jersey scenes are inspired not only by their history and character but by the beautiful surroundings. I cannot paint a Jersey scene without delving into its history and finding out more about it. You might find it interesting too.

Another iconic landmark, this large Martello Tower along the shoreline of St. Ouens Bay and completed in 1834, it is shorter and wider than its neighbouring Lewis’ Tower and has a curved ceiling. Used by the Germans in WW2, it was armed with one 24 pounder gun, two 24 pounder short guns and a redoubt in front of the tower had three 24 pounder guns.

I could have painted Kempt Tower facing south and using the sweep of the bay towards Corbiere lighthouse as a backdrop but I preferred the view towards L’Etacq so the picture included the WW2 military bunkers. I liked the historical juxtaposition.
