Commissioned by Sir Walter Raleigh to protect the whole of St. Aubins bay containing St. Helier, our capital, construction started in the 16th century, additions during the 17th and 18th century and finally by the German forces who occupied Jersey during WW2, created what it is today. History, level upon level. Named after Queen Elizabeth 1st, it can be reached on foot via a causeway at low tide or use the Castle ferry at any tide level.

A really interesting, steeped in history, yet peaceful place, especially I found, the breakwater leading to L’Hermitage. So quiet until the midday gun is fired! Usually viewed from shore as this picture is, it lies quietly in the bay, bathed in history, dormant.
